The idea for Cadair View Lodge was conceived in early 2003 over a bottle or 2 of good red wine. I won’t bore you with the details but we found ourselves with a chunk of money and no reason to get out of bed on a Monday morning anymore… no the red wine wasn’t drunk on a Monday morning! We looked at the skills that we had (jointly 40+ years in IT and an interest in photography) and decided to set up a photography business. We already owned a log cabin in Snowdonia (that we used ourselves) and thought that buying another one to rent out would be a good investment for our chunk of money rather than leaving the money in the Bank.
There was / is a log cabin management company on the site where we operate and the bottle of red wine helped us to see that there were opportunities in the area that they were missing out on. So we decided to focus our business on exploiting those opportunities. We bought our first log cabin to rent and were up and running in August 2003. Our intention was to concentrate on our other business interests and to let the cabin as a sideline.
By October 2003 our first cabin was booked solid and so we bought another cabin. As previously our intentions were no larger than this.
By Christmas 2003 we had people who owned log cabins on the site knocking on our door asking if we would manage their log cabins for them. They’d seen how many bookings our log cabins were getting and wondered if we could do the same for theirs. And so the business grew – and continues to grow. At the peak we managed 26 cabins (some are only available through the Summer) and 2 bunkhouses. We have never advertised for owners to let us manage their cabins – it has always been through word of mouth.
Unfortunately due to the economic downturn many of our cabin owners sold their cabins but we still have a core of 5.
Our business is based on giving guests what we would want ourselves from a stay. Good service, comfortable well-equipped cabins and help to make sure that they have the best possible break. We pride ourselves in going beyond our guests’ expectations. The feedback on our website is testimony to this.
